Diarmaid and Grainne's cave Diarmaid and Grainne's Cave is another showpiece of the area. Irish folklore legend has it that the two lovers used it as a hideout from Grainne's spurned lover Fionn MacCool to whom she was to be married. Follow directions for the Benwiskin Horseshoe. Follow the road right around until you come to the old abandoned school house. Walk straight up the hill behind the school house to reach the cave. There is some scrambling required near the access so be careful; this part of the walk is very steep and not for the inexperienced walker. Once in the cave, assuming you have brought a torch with you be prepared to do a bit of exploring you'll realise all is not what it seems! To the east of the cave is an old track leading up to a disused quartzite mine which was in use up until ?
Probably the most impressive of all the features in the Dartry Mountain Range is "The Gorge". Located on the south facing slopes of King's Mountain, "The Gorge" is not for the faint hearted as there is some climbing involved in the massive gap through the hill that is part of a fault line that runs west to East. Examine an Ordnance Survey map to find out where it is.
Always remember that in most cases you are walking over somebody's land. So don't forget to always ask permission from the landowner before beginning.
