Golfing

The North West is a golfer's paradise. Any golfing trip to this area can combine some of Ireland's premier Links courses with other more wooded, sheltered courses. Some are attached to hotels where you can base yourself while others are only a short trip from the nearest town where you can entertain yourself when not out on the course.

Bundoran itself has a famous Golf Club which surrounds the picturesque Great Northern Hotel. Presenting a challenging par 70, this golf course sweeps along the rugged Donegal Bay coastline with undulating terrain making up the 18 holes. With endless views of the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the magnificent Dartry Mountains to the east, you are blessed with 360 degree superb panoramic views no matter what hole you are playing.

Just 20 minutes north of Bundoran is another links course at Murvagh. Donegal Golf Club was founded in 1959 and in 2005 was rated 96th in the Golf World Top 100 Must Play golf courses in the world. If you have a bit of spare energy when you're finished your round, Murvagh has a beautiful beach and forest for a relaxing stroll.

Another 20 minutes across the border in Fermanagh is Castle Hume Golf Club. The course is situated within the grounds of Old Ely Estate on the edges of Lough Erne. This Championship golf course is situated on some of the most scenic parkland in Co. Fermanagh. It boasts over seven thousand trees and over thirty bunkers.

25 minutes south of Bundoran in Co. Sligo is Sligo Golf Club. It is situated at Rosses Point, a seaside village eight kilometers north west of Sligo town, and is one of the oldest and best known links courses in Ireland. Founded in 1894 on land leased from Henry Middleton, an uncle of W.B Yeats the famous poet and Nobel Prize winner for literature and his brother Jack B Yeats the noted landscape painter. The club has hosted many prestigious events over the years. It is home to the West of Ireland Championship which is held each Easter. The club has hosted the Irish Close Championship as well as the Interprovincial and the Home International Championships which were staged here in 1991 when Ireland won the Raymond Trophy.
