Knocknarae (Hill of the Executions) - Sligo
Overlooking the surfing town of Strandhill is Knocknarae, a gently sloping hill which is part of the Ox Mountain Range situated in county Sligo. Immediately evident from the base of the hill and indeed from Sligo town is the large cairn on the hill's summit. Legend has it that this is the grave of the Pirate Queen Maeve and tradition has it that if you and a lover lay a stone on the grave you will be together forever. The grave itself is 10 meters height and weighs in at 40,000 tons.
Maeve was a Celtic queen living in approximately the 1st century B.C. She is most famous as a protagonist in the epic story of the Cattle Raid of Cooley (The Táin Bó Cuailnge) and adversary of Cúchulainn the legendary Celtic hero. Maeve was "no shrinking violet" and left a trail of death and destruction in her path and all over a bull and a man!
The walk at Knocknarae is easy and can be enjoyed by people of all levels of walking experience. The hill itself offers beautiful sea views over the coast of Sligo and north Mayo. There is a tourist car park at the base of the easterly side of Knocknarae. This is sign posted on the main Sligo to Strandhill road. It is an easy ½ hour cycle from Sligo town centre.
